Bergen op Zoom has 303 national monuments and 472 municipal monuments and boasts the oldest city palace in the Netherlands (the Markiezenhof, dating from 1485).
The twelve most important monuments to visit are: the Markiezenhof, Saint Gertrude's Church with the Peperbus, the City Hall on the Grote Markt, the Prison Gate, the Synagogue, the Ravelijn Op den Zoom, Fort de Roovere with the Moses Bridge, the Waterschans, the Hidden Fortress, the Grebbe, the Governor's House, and De Draak.
Together they tell 800 years of the city's history, which bears the title 'Theatre of the Good Life'.
