Water defence

Estimated reading time: approx. 1m 4s

On the old harbour entrance of Bergen op Zoom lies the Waterschans, the city's oldest fortification. This unique defensive work was constructed in 1584 on the initiative of William of Orange, who was also Marquis of Bergen op Zoom at the time. He knew better than anyone how important this location was: whoever controlled the Waterschans held the key to the city.

Via the Waterschans, Bergen op Zoom could be supplied from the Scheldt, while enemies were held back. This smart location made the city difficult to conquer. Several attacks were successfully repelled, partly thanks to this strong defensive point. Around 1850, the Waterschans lost its military function and a completely new chapter began.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the site was used for all sorts of businesses. Oyster pits and a lobster farm were established, as Bergen op Zoom was once world-famous for its oysters. Later, when water quality deteriorated, other industries took over, such as oil storage, cast iron, and a construction company. These activities continued until 2015.

It was then decided to restore and make the Waterschans accessible again. During the reconstruction, the traces of the industrial past, such as the oyster pits and old buildings, were deliberately taken into account. Thus, the site not only tells the story of fortifications but also of trade and industry.

Nowadays, you can enjoy wonderful walks or bike rides here along the established routes. You can see restored ramparts, the large inner courtyard of the ravelin, and even an old 19th-century floodgate. The Waterschans is freely accessible and borders the beautiful Natura 2000 area De Molenplaat – a lovely combination of history and nature.
