On the last Sunday of June (28 June 2026), as has been traditional for many years, the Maria Ommegang procession will once again make its way through the atmospheric old centre of Bergen op Zoom. This event is a true cultural and historical experience for both locals and visitors from afar. The procession of thanksgiving, in honour of Mary, serves as a reminder that Bergen op Zoom was spared from major wartime violence during the Second World War. With historical groups, biblical scenes, floats, and singing and dancing groups, it promises to be another grand spectacle.
With no fewer than 900 participants, ranging from young to old and divided into 70 groups, supported by 6 impressive floats, the Maria Ommegang will offer an unforgettable experience. This year, the procession will hark back to the Holy Cross procession from the Middle Ages, as it used to parade through the streets of Bergen op Zoom. The carefully crafted costumes, authentic props, beautiful floats, and the impressive performance put on will ensure a breathtaking spectacle that will delight spectators.
The Maria Ommegang is much more than just a procession. It is a tribute to history, a celebration of faith, and a strengthening of community bonds. This event brings together people from different backgrounds and generations, where young and old can collectively experience the rich culture and traditions of Bergen op Zoom. The Maria Ommegang offers not only visual splendour but also a unique opportunity to see history come to life.
For the inhabitants of Bergen op Zoom, the Maria Ommegang is a moment of pride and connection with their city. The event reminds them of the resilience and good fortune their community has experienced during the difficult period of war and devastation. It is a tribute to those who protected their city and saved it from the destruction that many other cities experienced at that time.
