In the characteristic city park A piece of the pie inside Bergen op Zoom is a special artwork titled “Wig” — a sculptural reminder of the city's rich military history. neighbourhood
The artwork Wedge consists of multiple V-shaped structures of iron and stone, which together form an impressive visual reference to the former defensive works around Bergen op Zoom. These V-shaped, converging elements are inspired by defensive walls that had been part of the city walls and fortifications designed by the famous military engineer since 1699. Menno van Coehoorn.
By using rubble in the constructions, Wedge not just an abstract form again, but it also tells a story of decay and continuity: the rubble refers to the The lost past of the old fortress town, but also to how history and landscape remain intertwined. The raw materials make it clear that the fortifications were once sturdy and resilient, but have now become part of the public space — a symbol of the transformation from military function to public art.
As a sculpture, it works Wedge not only historically, but also Urban and ruralit forms a dialogue between the green park and the adjacent residential area, inviting visitors to contemplate the layers of time and use in the city.
