On the outskirts of Bergen op Zoom lies a special place where silence speaks and history can be felt. The Visitor Centre at the war cemeteries forms the gateway to two impressive military burial grounds: the Canadian War Cemetery and the British War Cemetery. Here rest over 2,800 servicemen who gave their lives for our freedom during the Second World War.
In the visitor centre, the past comes alive. Personal stories, photographs and objects bring the young men behind the graves to life. Who were they? Where did they come from? And what did their efforts mean for the Netherlands and Europe? The exhibitions answer these questions and are deeply moving, precisely because of their human aspect.
Outside, between the perfectly maintained rows of white gravestones and crosses, you experience a special peace. The symmetry, the greenery, and the silence create a place that invites contemplation. It is not just a historical visit, but also a moment of reflection.
A visit to the War Graves Centre is more than a day out. It's an encounter with stories that must never be forgotten. Whether you're interested in history, seeking deeper understanding, or simply want to pause for a moment: this place will move you.
An impressive destination that gives your visit to Bergen op Zoom extra meaning.
