Green facade with text and balcony - Bergen op Zoom

Music in the Trees

Expected reading time: approx. 41s

Around Beursplein in the city centre stands a remarkable work of art that uniquely expresses the region's rich history and cultural heritage. This artwork incorporates both musical elements and texts that bring the famous song “Merck toch hoe Sterck” to life.

“Merck toch hoe Sterck” is a song with deep roots in Dutch history. It dates back to the Eighty Years' War, a period when the Dutch fought for their freedom against Spanish rule. This struggle and the desire for peace and independence are aptly expressed in this historical song. The artwork on the Beursplein captures these sentiments in an audiosculptural manner, offering visitors not only the opportunity to read it but also to see the musical notes.

The artwork was created by Kees Warmoeskerken.
