To mark the important occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands, enthusiastic and creative pupils from three prominent secondary schools in Bergen op Zoom—the Moller Lyceum, RSG ’t Rijks, and Roncalli—have joined forces. Together, they have embarked on a special art project. They have designed a series of panels that serve not only as an artistic expression but also as an educational monument showcasing personal stories, historical facts, and inspiring messages about the Second World War and the liberation.
These artistically designed panels have been created with care and attention to detail and have been prominently placed around the King's Linden, a memorable tree in the heart of Bergen op Zoom. The choice to position the panels specifically around this remarkable tree, which itself symbolises connection and continuity, underscores the deeper meaning of the project. Visitors to the square are invited to reflect on the past, contemplate the value of freedom, and discover the stories of hope, perseverance and cooperation that come to life in each panel.
This project has not only contributed to raising awareness of the importance of freedom and remembrance within the local community, but also gave students the chance to reflect creatively on the history of their town and their role in keeping these memories alive. The panels now form a lasting reminder for current and future generations alike who wish to reflect on the value of freedom, peace and connection in our society.
