Statue of a woman in historical clothing - Bergen op Zoom

 The Madwoman Johanna figurine

Estimated reading time: approx. 1 min

The image of Joanna the Mad In the Markiezenhof refers to a remarkable and weighty figure from European history, who is also closely associated with Bergen op Zoom. Joanna of Castile (1479–1555), daughter of the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, was married to Philip the Handsome, Lord of the Netherlands. Through this marriage, she became part of the Burgundian-Habsburg power network, to which the Marquises of Bergen op Zoom also belonged.

Painting by Johanna. Painter unknown.

After Philip's early death, Joanna became embroiled in a political power struggle. Her father and later her son, Emperor Charles V, declared her mentally ill and locked her up. The nickname “The Madman” reflects rather, therefore, how power, womanhood and vulnerability were dealt with at that time. Historians doubt whether Johanna was truly insane, or was primarily being politically sidelined.

In the sixteenth century, the Markiezenhof served as an important court within the Habsburg Netherlands. Members of the royal house resided here or had close ties to it. The statue of Johanna is a reminder of this international dimension of Bergen op Zoom: a city that had significance not only regionally but also at a European level.

Johanna's effigy in the Markiezenhof invites reflection. It is not a triumphant image of royalty, but a symbol of power and powerlessness, of personal tragedy within grand political systems. In doing so, the effigy seamlessly aligns with the history of the Markiezenhof itself: a place where splendour, politics, and human stories converge.
