Statue of a horse rider in a park - Bergen op Zoom

Knight

Estimated reading time: approx. 51s

The bronze statue Knight is a striking work of art in the sculpture garden of the city palace Het Markiezenhof. It was made in 1986 by sculptor Felix van der Linden.

The title Knight, French for ‘knight’, evokes associations with nobility, honour, and vigilance. As such, the image aligns well thematically with the historical context of Het Markiezenhof, the former palatial residence of the lords and marquises of Bergen op Zoom. For centuries, this complex was the administrative and representative heart of the city, where power, culture, and diplomacy converged. The knight figure can be seen as a symbolic guardian of this history.

The various courtyards and gardens of the Princely Court lend the city palace an open yet intimate character. In the sculpture garden, surrounded by historic walls and greenery, comes Knight particularly effective.

The image thus forms a bridge between past and present. It recalls the noble history of Bergen op Zoom, but is at the same time a contemporary work of art that invites viewing and reflection. Knight stands not only for protection and steadfastness, but also for the care and commitment with which the Markiezenhof has been preserved for future generations.
