Musical Fundraising Rotary BoZ & De Sjefkes

On Saturday 27 June, a special musical fundraising event will take place at De Maagd theatre. Four prominent Bergen residents with no conducting experience — Sjoerd van den Boom, Dennis van Tilborg, Marloes Krijnen and Letty Demmers — will take turns in the conductor's role that evening to get the best out of the musical pieces, performed by Harmonie Kolpingszonen, De Sjefkes. They will be competing for the coveted Bergse Baton. Who will be the chapel master, more importantly, who *is* the chapel master?

Two charities

This fundraising event is an initiative by Rotary Bergen op Zoom and De Sjefkes, who are jointly supporting local charities. The proceeds will benefit the Stichting Podiumkunsten Bergen op Zoom and the Stichting Cultuurpodium Ontmoetingskerk.  

Jury and the Bergse Baton

The participating conductors will receive pre-training and guidance to enable them to lead the orchestra as harmoniously as possible. An expert jury, led by Koert Damveld and flanked by Meike Warmoeskerken and Maarten Stalpers, will assess the participants on, among other things, conducting technique, preparation, rhythmic cues, and non-verbal communication. The conductor who most convincingly conveys the musical piece performed by De Sjefkes to the audience wins the Bergse Baton.

Jasper de Waal

The involvement of the internationally renowned horn player and conductor Jasper de Waal adds extra allure to this fundraising event. He will guide the participating candidates during their preparation and support them until the moment they actually stand on the podium with the orchestra. Furthermore, he will perform that evening as the fifth conductor and lead a number of musical pieces.
