Markiezenhof Sculpture Garden

Estimated reading time: approx. 56s

The Sculpture Garden is located behind the Bergen op Zoom library and can be reached via the entrance next to the West Brabants Archief (Koetshuis). The Sculpture Garden is free to enter, so feel free to wander through this hidden gem and enjoy the peace and quiet in the middle of the centre.

Meet (the statues of) Anthonis (Antoon) Keldermans and his young son Rombout II. The Flemish architect Anthonis was the designer and builder of, among other things, the Markiezenhof in 1485, the Sint Gertrudis Church in 1489, and the Castle of Borgvliet around 1504. Years prior, he was appointed chief master builder of the Marquisate of Bergen op Zoom. Anthonis worked with his son Rombout II on the Markiezenhof.

When you look at the image, you see the young apprentice Rombout II standing before his father with a hammer and chisel. A reminder of the architectural legacy the Keldermans family left behind in Bergen op Zoom. That Rombout II had his father's genes was evident in his own later projects. The young Keldermans was responsible for the design of Wouw Castle and rebuilt the village church to the size you still recognise today. He eventually even became the personal architect of Emperor Charles V.

More Information about this image and the other sculptures in the sculpture garden can be found at KidOR, Foundation for Art in Public Spaces.

Besides the statues, this part of the garden also features a Historic City Allotment.
