The age-old tradition of the Maria Ommegang returns on Sunday 28 June 2026 Back to the centre of Bergen op Zoom. The historical procession traditionally moves through the city centre on the last Sunday of June, bringing an impressive cultural spectacle with it. The parade attracts many visitors to the city every year.
The Maria Ommegang is a cultural-historical procession of thanksgiving in honour of Mary. The procession originated after the Second World War because Bergen op Zoom was relatively spared from large-scale wartime violence. Today, the event forms an important part of the city's cultural heritage.
During the procession, historical groups, biblical scenes, singing and dancing groups, and large floats parade through the streets of the old town centre. In total, approximately 700 participants, distributed over 70 groups, take part in the parade. In addition, six floats will be in the procession.
The Maria Ommegang harks back to the medieval Holy Cross procession that used to take place in Bergen op Zoom. Each year, the costumes, props and street theatre create an impressive spectacle in the city centre.
The procession departs at Sunday 28 June 2026 at 3.00 pm from the Markiezenhof in Bergen op Zoom. The event is free to attend. Visitors can also reserve a seat on the Grote Markt to €5.
