In the very heart of the historic city of Bergen op Zoom lies the Markiezenhof, the oldest city palace in the Netherlands. A place where you can escape the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in the world of the marquesses.
Wander through stately halls, discover hidden stories and enjoy the tranquility of the French Garden, courtyards and stylish rooms. Or immerse yourself in the world of light, music and spinning miniature attractions in our fairground museum.
This year too, there's a load to experience, possibly even things you haven't seen before. (Re)discover the Markiezenhof, a palace full of stories.
New at the Markiezenhof is the exhibition ‘Between Fortress and Delta’. Here you'll discover why Bergen op Zoom was known for centuries as the ultimate impregnable fortress city, with the help of our large model, among other things. You'll learn how water was both friend and foe: how it protected the city, but also determined daily life, shaped the city as a wealthy trading town, and how the influence of fresh and saltwater has resulted in unique flora and fauna. A story of struggle, cleverness and (sur)vival, making it surprisingly relevant today.
If you visit the Markiezenhof during the summer, there's even more to do. With the spectacular bird of prey shows as the main attraction. On various days in July and August, you'll see impressive birds of prey up close and experience their speed, power, and precision. Dates: 15, 18, 22, 25 and 29 July and 1, 5, 8, 12, 15, 19 and 22 August. Times: 1:30 PM & 3:00 PM.
For families, there are also various treasure hunts through the palace. From detective puzzles to a fairground treasure hunt and even a Pirate treasure hunt: ideal for letting children discover the museum in a playful way.
Even those who visit more often see something different each time. Our exhibitions are constantly changing. The following exhibitions are scheduled for the coming period.
Gourmandise, a Blissful Sin
Until 10 January, you can find the exhibition ‘Gluttony, a Blissful Sin’ in our Domain of the Sea Knight. This is a compact, stimulating exhibition that will make you look differently at something we all recognise. A small journey of discovery that invites reflection and perhaps also enjoyment.
In the Garden Hall of the city palace, you can find the exhibition ‘SHE – A Female Perspective’ until 30 August. An exhibition featuring small works by female artists from all over the world. A female perspective on the past 5 years.
This autumn, we are opening another major new exhibition in our ‘Fortress, Resistance, Freedom’ Treasury. About struggle and freedom, fittingly reflecting the city's rich history. Open from 11 September.
