Brick wall with striking sculpture on facade - Bergen op Zoom

Treasurers of the Bergse Vastenavend

Estimated reading time: approx. 51s

On the corner of Moeregrebstraat and Morganstraat hangs a special piece of art that symbolises the soul of Krabbegat: Keepers of the Bergen Carnival. The image was designed and manufactured by the Bergse artist Corrie Hagenaars.

The artwork shows a Anonymous Shrovetide reveller. No recognisable character, but rather the ordinary resident of Bergen op Zoom who makes the Vastenavend possible every year. With this, the statue symbolises everyone who lives, preserves and passes on the tradition.

The name Treasurers refers to the invisible wealth of the Bergse Vastenavend: the stories, symbols, songs, and rituals that have been cherished for generations. Subtle references to this tradition are incorporated into the image, such as Vastenavend emblems and years that recall previous editions.

The artwork was in 2005 unveiled and donated to the city on the occasion of a collector's club anniversary ’T Veldteke. Since then, it has formed a permanent, but often unnoticed, focal point in the city centre.

Tip: Take a moment to look up. This image shows that the Bergse Vastenavend doesn't just live in February, but is part of the city all year round.
