Street with shops and a large tree

Thick tree

Estimated reading time: approx. 1m 17s

Right in the middle of the Gouvernementsplein stands a true urban legend: the Thick Tree. This majestic plane tree is a fixed landmark for many people from Bergen. “Let's meet at the Thick Tree” you'll often hear around here. The tree was planted in the late 19th century, when this square was still the front garden of the Government building. According to the Brabants Historical Information Centre, this happened in 1868.

With its enormous trunk and widespread branches, the Fat Tree shows how much it has already experienced. Generations of Bergen residents have passed under this canopy: on their way to school, work, the market, or simply to enjoy the square for a while. Especially on warm summer days, it’s wonderful to linger here, thanks to the shade the tree provides.

These days, the Government Square is no longer a quiet garden, but a lively city square. Around the Big Tree, you'll find historic buildings, cosy cafes, and inviting terraces. It's a place where people meet, where events are held, and where the city comes together. During markets, festivals, and other activities, the Big Tree stands in the middle like a silent observer, as if watching over everything.

During the recent redesign of the square, the tree has been given extra prominence. Benches have been placed around its trunk, allowing you to sit here and watch the city life go by in peace. Whether you want to rest for a moment, people-watch, or simply soak up the atmosphere: the Dikke Boom is always a great spot. It's a place where the history, nature, and daily life of Bergen op Zoom come together.

This tree also has its own poem, by Bert Bevers:

Staying is just as easy for you
as if silence were a mute.
You see. You see what we do not see
but you play dumb.

Numerous generations mingled there
this tribe that only longs for land
and light and space, and you, you know that
the whole world hangs on your roots.
